MediaTek: 43.8% market share
The Taiwanese chipmaker has seen considerable growth in the phone SoC market in recent months. Now, a new report has revealed that the company managed to capture a record 43% market share for its AP shipments (application processor) and SoC (System on Chip) for mobile devices.
According to a report by Counterpoint Research, MediaTek’s SoC and AP shipments grew 31% year-over-year (YoY) in the second quarter of this year. The growth comes thanks to the explosive growth in shipments of 5G-enabled phones over the same period last year. Therefore, the company held a dominant 43% market share for SoCs in the second quarter of 2021, with its LTE chips also seeing high shipments.
Meantime, Qualcomm was hit by component supply problems and lower yields. Either way, it managed to dominate 5G baseband modem shipments with a market share of 55%. Additionally, the brand has also realigned its component sourcing strategy which is expected to help increase its offering and overall earnings.
Samsung, on the other hand, only managed to capture 10% of the market share of 5G baseband shipments and also slipped to fifth place with a 7% share of total SoC shipments behind Apple and UNISOC they held. respectively 14 and 9% of the market shares.
The research director Dale Gai he has declared:
MediaTek dominated the smartphone SoC market with its all-time highest share of 43%, driven by a competitive 5G portfolio in the lower-middle segment and with no major supply constraints. Compared to Qualcomm, MediaTek benefited from fewer supply constraints in the first half of 2021, including RFICs (radio frequency integrated circuits), power management integrated circuits (PMICs), and stable production yields from TSMC. Shipments of 4G SoCs have further helped MediaTek strengthen its leading position.
